Oftentimes a person comes to me and says, “Isabel, Need to Lose Weight and Fast, will joining a gym help me achieve my goals?” My standard response is that everyone is different. The determining factor is what does and does not work for you. There are a lot of good reasons to join a gym, but there also are some drawbacks.
Possible arguments as to why you might desire to join a gym
* Stimulation … Everyone at the gym is there for one reason—to exercise. Being around people who share the same objective can motivate you to dig your heels in and get your workouts done. If going to the gym will encourage you to exercise regularly, then I say go for it!
* No distractions at home … At home, there always are alternative things to do other than your workout. Too often exercising falls by the wayside because of mental distractions. Pressing household duties such as laundry, phone calls, dinner, and the dishes are put on hold when you are working out at the gym.
* Benefits include fitness classes and exercise equipment at your disposal … You don’t need much exercise equipment to get a good workout. Boredom can hinder your exercise regime if you stick to running on one treadmill and exercise watching the same video. Boredom rarely is a problem when you work out at a gym because of the variety of fitness classes and exercise equipment available to you.
A few argument vs. joining a gym include
* Contracts can work against you … If used religiously, gym memberships can be extremely beneficial. In contrast, many gym members fade away after fast starts. It will be the gym and not you who wins if you sign a 12-month contract, lose interest, and quit using the facility. In that event, you will not recoup your investment.
* By signing a 12-month fee schedule, you could be in trouble … Membership fees often are paid to gyms through automated withdrawals. Frightening as it may seem, the gym will continue draining your bank account until the contract expires, regardless of what is happening with your finances. Because your agreement was to institute automatic withdrawals, ugly consequences such as overdraft charges and more could result if, for whatever reason, you no longer have funds in the bank to cover the withdrawals.
* More people than you are comfortable with … The bottom line for gyms is the almighty dollar. More money is generated when gyms sign on additional members. When peak exercise hours arrive, the facilities can become crowded. If you are somewhat of a loner and don’t like crowds, joining a gym might not work for you.
* Germy equipment Sweaty bodies and dirty hands; it’s no secret that the exercise equipment and locker rooms at gyms are stomping grounds for germs|Germs thrive on exercise equipment and in gym locker rooms where dirty hands and sweaty bodies are the norm|Gym locker rooms and exercise equipment in gyms attract unhealthy germs because of the high incidence of dirty bodies and sweaty hands}. Touch germy equipment and your chances of getting sick or experiencing infections are greatly enhanced. Germaphobes and anyone who doesn’t wash their hands on a regular basis might consider not joining a gym.
How to deal with problems with gyms Although there are many ways to do so, losing weight through gym membership is not uncommon. If you’re not sure if a gym is right for you, go to a nearby facility and ask for a free trial membership. Full-time membership is something you do not initially have to commit to when you are granted a free trial membership.
Even if you decide to join a gym, you still have the option to negotiate your price to join. Some gyms will waive their registration fees or offer as much as 30 percent off membership prices: all you gotta’ do is ask.
If you detest the idea of being trapped in a contract, ask for a month-to-month membership. Most gyms don’t advertise the month-to-month thing because it eats into their profits. Paying as you go is what separates the month-by-month plan from other ways to join a gym. By this means, no additional fees are required if you quit going to the gym. And so, if how to diet, this is one means how you can retain the option of not getting tied down to a contract, if that is your desire.
