Organic Golden Flaxseed: What You Need to Know

Advertisements on organic golden flax seed abound in newspapers, magazines, TV, and the Internet, but do we really know what they are and what effects they have on our health? The flax plant is an annual plant, about 1.2 meters in length, with slim stems, that produces the organic flaxseed. This plant produces two kinds of seeds, golden and brown. The golden variety is usually preferred for human consumption because most people prefer its color and some believe it has a nuttier taste. The brown seeds, however, are usually used for fiber, cattle feed, paint, solvents, and oil.

We know that organic flaxseed is a great source for a wealth of nutrients: fiber, most B-vitamins, anti-oxidants, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids, and they stabilize blood sugar, assist in weight management, have hormone-balancing, anti- fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral effects on the body, improve the immune system, and act as building blocks in cell membranes. These seeds also lower cholesterol and blood pressure, treat constipation and diarrhea, decrease the possibility of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, and ease the pain of arthritis.

The various forms in which these seeds are usually sold are whole, ground, as oil, capsules, or powder. They’re most nutritious when bought whole and only ground when needed, because once ground, the oxygen exposure will lessen the nutritional value of the seeds.

For everyday consumption, crush the whole seeds in a blender or coffee grinder, and just add 1/8 to 1/4 cup of organic golden flax seed to your cereal or juice, and you’re on the first step to a healthy regimen. Another way to include it in your diet is by adding it to meatloaf, casseroles, or meatballs. It is also advisable to include the seeds when baking breads and pastries or throwing them in salads and yoghurts.

Always drink lots of water when taking golden flaxseed. Start with a small amount of the seeds, then you can increase your intake slowly over time, otherwise it can have a laxative effect on your body due to the high fiber content.

The seeds can be stored for up to a year in room temperature as long as they’re preserved whole. As much as possible, only grind them when needed. Once ground, seal them in an air-tight container; these must be consumed within a few days, however. If not used in days, you can keep them in the freezer for a month. The exception is MeadowPure processed flaxseed which can be stored for up to 5 years whole or up to 2 years if milled.

Organic flaxseeds come from the flax plant, which produces two variants: golden and brown. The organic golden flax seeds have a lot of positive effects on a person’s health, and are a great source of lots of nutrients. The whole seeds are most nutritious, and can be included in several different recipes when ground. It’s important to take these seeds with lots of water, to not take too much at once, and to always store properly.
