Humans are totally dependent on water. It makes up a large percentage of our body and we also need it for washing, cleaning irrigating our crops and keeping our livestock healthy.
Put simply, without water we would cease to exist.
Your body is more than 60% water. Water is essential for controlling temperature, transporting nutrients, and eliminating waste. It is also very important for the transmission of electrical messages between cells so that your brain can control your body. It is also a good lubricant.
Water is lost from the body through breathing, urination and perspiration. It must be replaced to prevent you dehydrating. If cells lose too much water they simply shrivel up and die.
Dehydration can be a killer. You can survive longer without food than you can without water. Without anything to drink, you will not survive beyond a few days. Symptoms of dehydration include headaches, feeling thirsty, constipation and muscle pain. If you are working out or in a hot environment you may be losing water quicker than you think and replacing it can in some cases be a matter of life and death.
The best way to replace lost water is to drink some more. You can also rehydrate by eating food or drinking other drinks. Remember that soft drinks contain sugar though and caffeinated drinks shouldn’t be drunk in large amounts because too much caffeine is bad for you.
If you are in the desperate circumstances of a life and death situation, you need to get something to drink fast. In hot weather you may actually need in excess of a gallon of water a day to stay healthy so locating clean water is a survival priority. In cold weather you may also be losing water quicker than you think because cold air has less moisture so it dehydrates you as you breathe.
If you can’t find drinking water, berries can give you enough to survive. Keep away from salty products and meat because they require water to digest and they will replace less than they take from you to process. Always pack plenty of water and if you are going into the wilderness, make sure you have a method of catching and storing water and a way to purify water from unclean sources (such as iodine tablets).
Water is essential for the human body and we need to drink it regularly to keep healthy. Whether you choose to have it bottled from a spring, from a tap, or from the office water coolers or cold drink vending machines, water is essential to life and health, so don’t take it for granted but remember to drink plenty of it.
